2013 marks the 100th year anniversary of the profession of dental hygiene.
There will be many global events to honor this centennial, including in Israel, the USA, and of course, the International Symposium on Dental Hygiene (ISDH), August 14-17, 2013 in Cape Town, South Africa. The theme is “Oral Health-Vital Link In Achieving Total Health”. The American Dental Hygienists' Association (ADHA's) 2013 Annual Session will be held in Boston, Massachusetts, June 19-25, 2013, with environmental activist Erin Brockovich, actress Debbie Reynolds, and actress and activist, Geena Davis. There will be an International Track for global participants. Let us know if you are planning a special 100 year celebration.

There are new resources available in English that focus on oral health of pregnant women. The National Maternal and Child Oral Health Policy Center (NMCOHPC), has released a brief that focuses on the oral health of pregnant women and young children. In associated news, the National Maternal and Child Oral Health Resource Center has issued “Oral Health Care During Pregnancy,” a national consensus statement and summary of an expert work group meeting. This document is intended to help professionals in communities plan, develop, and implement programs to help ensure that pregnant women receive optimal oral health services. It was developed with support from the US Maternal and Child Heath Bureau of the Health Resources and Services Administration.

In the USA, a white paper from the Pew Children's Dental Campaign investigates how the addition of dental therapists to the dental team may expand the capacity of Federally Qualified Health Clinics to treat more children.(5) As many of you know, therapists are new to the USA but are part of health care delivery in other parts of the world.

World Diabetes Day (WDD) is celebrated every year on November14. The World Diabetes Day campaign is led by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and its member associations. It engages millions of people worldwide in diabetes advocacy and awareness. World Diabetes Day was created in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organization (WHO) in response to growing concerns about the escalating health threat that diabetes now poses. World Diabetes Day became an official United Nations Day in 2007 with the passage of United Nation Resolution 61/225. The campaign draws attention to issues of paramount importance to the diabetes world and keeps diabetes firmly in the public spotlight.
매해 11월 14일에는 세계당뇨의 날(WDD) 기념식이 열립니다. WDD 캠페인은 세계당뇨 연합회(IDF)와 그 협회의 회원들에 의해서 이끌어집니다. 당뇨와 관련된 건강 위협에 따른 증가 우려에 대응하여서, 1991년에 세계당뇨 연합회(IDF)와 세계보건기구(WHO)가 세계당뇨의 날(WDD)을 만들었습니다. 유엔 결의안 61/225가 통과됨에 따라 2007년도는 세계당뇨의 날(WDD)이 유엔공식기념일이 되었습니다. 이 캠페인은 전 세계적으로 무엇보다도 중요한 당뇨병에 관한 관심을 이끌 수 있으며, 대중의 주목을 확고하게 유지할 수 있습니다.
There is news on the Esther Wilkins International Education Program (EWIEP), created to provide dental hygienists with educational tools for community outreach. The NCOHF is developing a global expansion plan, after being encouraged by companies and individuals. Identification of countries who would be most motivated to participate in such a community outreach program will be determined, and language translations would take place. Stay tuned!
