Abstract:In this lecture there will be a presentation of the Swiss Paraplegic center in Nottwil, the center for the Rehabilitation and treatment of new injured persons. Information about a spinal cord injury - complete, incomplete, primary, secondary injuries will be given, addressing the differences between tetra - and paraplegic. Causes of injury - through a car accident, sports-, domestic- or illness will be discussed as well as differences in ages and sex of patients. The neurocontrol triangle will be explained. An incomplete paraplegic patient way of life is presented and problems like urinary infections and the way these patients are tried to rehabilitate with different kinds of therapy and goals. I will explain my work with the patients as a dental hygienist as well as motivating / coaching the care-staff of the center and my personal experiences and motivation to work with spinal cord patients.
